The pros and cons of WebRTC

When it comes to choosing a browser technology to transfer streaming data, WebRTC is a double-edged sword.

On one side, it can be extremely useful for transferring video and text files with just a browser. No need of having a third-party server or installing additional plug-ins. This technology just requires JavaScript code to transfer streaming data for point-to-point transmission.

This ease of use is allowed to WebRTC specific traits, including:

  • It's an open-source project, originally developed by Google but supported by most browsers, including Firefox and Opera.
  • Its architecture is much safer and stable than Flash, and allows for better sound quality.
  • It has three main APIs  (getUserMedia, RTCPeerConnection, and RTCDataChannel) that allow this tech to be implemented by developers into existing online businesses. T that allow third

However, it still has some disadvantages:

  • It‘s still under development, which challenges its standardization in the industry
  • It’s not cross-platform, although it’s supported by most browsers
  • It’s steady enough for social content, like video chats and Zoom meetings. But for using with streaming, it might not be steady enough. At least not yet.
